In 1989 Handler was diagnosed with cancer and died ten years afterward. Her father was Jewish and she grew up in Reform Judaism. Handler was born in a good neighborhood and enjoyed a pleasant childhood. At the age of 19 she was able to move to Los Angeles to pursue her acting profession. Handler began to perform for money. Handler when she was at the age of 21 and decided to pursue stand-up comedy as a full-time occupation following her discovery of storytelling. Handler began her career in her role on the Oxygen Network's Girls Behaving poorly the reality series that featured concealed cameras and practical jokes. From 2002 until 2005, the show aired.
